ther|mom|e|ter «thuhr MOM uh tuhr», noun.
an instrument for measuring temperature. Most thermometers contain mercury or alcohol in a narrow tube. When the temperature outside it goes up, the liquid rises by expanding; when the temperature goes down, the liquid drops by contracting.
